St Clare Friary News, Spring-Summer, 2014

It has been a busy late spring-early summer for us here at St. Clare fraternity.  Brother Kennedy Santiago is away in Toronto for three months taking part in Clinical Pastoral Experience sessions.  These sessions are for those in ministry, particularly hospital chaplains.

Brother Matthieu Gombo Yange has been filling in for the parishes of Trail, Castlegar (Slocan city, New Denver) and Nelon Cathedral since after Easter.

From June 16 to 18, he attended the Annual “Retreats Canada West” meeting in Edmonton. “Retreats Canada West” is a member-based organization d of retreat facilities, with the mission of providing insights, support, resources and encouragement for all members working in retreat ministry, welcoming anyone in the name of Christ, supporting and encouraging groups and individuals on the their faith journey and providing for the spiritual needs of the community they serve.

Besides his role as Administrator of Seton House of Prayer Retreat Centre, Kelowna, BC, Brother Matthieu Gombo Yange has been asked by Bishop John Corriveau, OFM Cap. to administer Holy Child Parish in Summerland, BC.

Brother Gerry Craig has been helping in local parishes as the need arises.  He will help in out-of-city parishes later as the summer goes on.

A number of visitors have graced or will grace us with their presence this late spring-summer: Brother Gerry welcomed his sister and her friend recently; Sylvestre Ibekwe, a seminarian of the Nelson Diocese has spent time with us.  Bishop John Corriveau regularly joins us for prayer and dinner.

Simply professed Brother Michael Mascarenhas (St. Conrad Fraternity, Toronto) is with us for June and July to experience Capuchin fraternity in the southern Okanagan of BC.  He is doing outreach and volunteer ministry among the poor of our area.  He is enjoying our clean air, pleasant temperatures and the “million dollar view” from our balcony.  He is also a skilled cook: we have enjoyed his curries while among us.  He promises us more meals with some of his favourite recipes. Brother Michael will return to his home fraternity early in August.

We will welcome in July and August Brother Greg Mulligan (his dad and family live in British Columbia), Brother Mark Schenk, Definitor General (counsellor to our Capuchin Minster General) and Brother David Connolly, our Provincial Minister.  Brothers Mark and David will be here for the official visitation of St. Clare fraternity.

We want all of you who are our Capuchin benefactors to know that we pray for you and your needs regularly.  We are very grateful for your witness and support for us, your Capuchin brothers.  We regularly include in our prayer as well all our affiliates and their needs.   We also include the brothers of our province and the world-wide Franciscan family.
